IVF may be considered when other approaches are not suitable or have not led to pregnancy. The physician decides after evaluating both partners.1 Situations that are sometimes associated with IVF include:
- Ovulation disorders, such as polycystic ovary syndrome or high prolactin levels2
- Reduced ovarian reserve or advanced age
- Endometriosis3
- Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes
- Differences in sperm count, structure or movement
- Erectile dysfunction or anatomical conditions of the male reproductive system
- Hormonal conditions that affect ovulation or sperm production
- Immune-related conditions
- Genetic conditions or repeated pregnancy loss, where embryo testing may be discussed4
In some couples no clear cause is found after evaluation (unexplained infertility).5
