Several historic sites and coastal towns can be reached from Izmir in a day. Distances and travel times below are approximate and by road.
Ephesus
The ancient city of Ephesus (Efes), near Selçuk, is about 80 km south of Izmir, around one hour by car. It is known for the Library of Celsus and the Great Theatre, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Selçuk can also be reached by İZBAN train.
Şirince
A hillside village about 8 km from Selçuk, known for its old stone houses.
Çeşme and Alaçatı
About 80 km west of Izmir, around one hour by car. Çeşme has beaches and a castle; Alaçatı is known for its stone houses, narrow streets and windsurfing.
Kuşadası
A coastal town about 95 km south of Izmir, around one hour and fifteen minutes by car, with a harbour and beaches.
Pergamon
The ancient city of Pergamon, in Bergama, is about 105 km north of Izmir. Its acropolis and the Asklepion, an ancient healing centre, are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Pamukkale and Hierapolis
About 230 km inland, around three hours by car each way. Pamukkale is known for its white travertine terraces above the ancient city of Hierapolis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a long day trip.
